Artist Manu

Rhythmicity of the unrhythmic

Statement: I'm Manu Kallikad

Since 1980, I've been immersed in the world of painting, driven by an innate talent and fueled by relentless research and hard work. Despite lacking formal education in painting, I've chiseled my skills over the years, carving out a unique path in the art world.

In 1982, I was influenced to compose what would become my first collage portrait, sparked by an idea that ignited within me. It was a style of painting that, at the time, few were familiar with, but I felt compelled to bring it to life. In 1988, my journey took a significant step forward as Guru Nithya Chaitanya inaugurated my first art exhibition at the Kozhikode Lalitha Kala Academy.

The recognition continued to grow, with Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi selecting me for a solo exhibition in 1999. By 2006, I was pushing boundaries even further, creating biographical portraits without the use of paint or brush, a testament to my evolving artistic expression.

In 2010, my name found its place in the records, as I entered the book for visualizing poetry in a truly unique manner. The years that followed saw further accolades, with collages of prominent figures like Indian movie star Kareena Kapoor and acclaimed writer Mr. M.T. Vasudevan Nair making their mark in the Limca Book of Records.

Membership in the Lalithakala Academy's Chitrakala Camp in 2016 signaled a deeper integration into the artistic community. But it wasn't just in painting that I found success. In 2017, I entered the records once again, this time for the World's Shortest Environmental Short Film, showcasing a diverse range of creative talents.

By 2018, my endeavors expanded into filmmaking, with the Varayanam series earning the prestigious Bust of India World Record. Varayanam, a portrayal of the 40 sequences of the Indian epic Ramayana using soil from different lands, captured attention for its unique approach, devoid of human figures yet rich in symbolism.

This journey culminated with Varayanam being featured in the Bust of India World Records 2018 edition, a testament to the fusion of creativity and innovation that defines my artistic endeavors.

Let's keep in touch

My artistic practice, spanning diverse mediums such as printmaking, painting, video, and performance, delves into a profound internal exploration of childhood role models, popular icons, and cultural stereotypes. Through this multifaceted approach, I challenge and question the widely accepted notions surrounding the construction of personal identity. By dissecting these elements, my work invites audience to reflect on and reconsider the influences that shape their own sense of self.
